The security situation in Europe and additional aid for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, were the main topics of discussion at the summit of partner nation leaders convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on 2 March 2025. The meeting took place in light of recent actions by the US administration led by President Donald Trump. Representing the Czech Republic, Prime Minister Petr Fiala emphasised the consensus on continuing support for Ukraine and strengthening the defence capabilities of European nations.

“Today in London, we laid the foundations of a ‘coalition of the responsible’. This is a group of nations committed to cooperation, for whom the security and defence of Europe are paramount. We agreed that all of us will increase our defence spending and that we will also strengthen military support for Ukraine, as the most critical security guarantee for Ukraine is a strong Ukrainian army. We are all fully aware of the seriousness of the situation, and now it is time to move from words to action. That is why I will soon discuss increasing the defence budget with my government colleagues,” stated Prime Minister Petr Fiala, noting that the Czech Republic currently meets its NATO commitment to allocate two per cent of GDP to defence.

The meeting of selected leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was called by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his return from the United States, where he had met with US President Donald Trump.

“I consider it crucial that France and the United Kingdom are working together and have assumed a leadership role. These are nations that are both permanent members of the UN Security Council and nuclear powers. Their cooperation, with our support, is of great importance, and I believe this is a positive development,” said Prime Minister Fiala.

According to Prime Minister Fiala, aiding Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace in its war against Russia must remain a fundamental priority for the whole of Europe, alongside accelerating the rearmament process. “Our historical experience teaches us that if we fail to act swiftly and allow the aggressor to dictate the terms, the consequences will be dire,” the Prime Minister warned.
