Czech Republic endorses EU pact with Turkey to stall illegal migration

EU leaders today struck an agreement with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu that will pave the way for all illegal migrants to be deported from the Greek islands back to Turkey, starting on 20 March 2016. This accord sets out to staunch the flow of illegal migration into the EU and smash the business network of smuggling gangs. Adherence to the agreement will be monitored on a monthly basis by both the EU and Turkey.

First day of the European Council dwells on economic growth, energy and migration

Economic growth, employment, energy and migration were on the agenda of yesterday’s European Council session, where the Czech Republic was represented by Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka. The European Council reaffirmed the strategy it had pursued so far in dealing with the migration crisis, including rigorous external border control and the deal needed between the EU and Turkey. Today, EU leaders will continue their talks, where they will be joined by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu.

Prime Minister Sobotka met with the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda

On Tuesday the 15th of March 2016 in Hrzánský Palace, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka met with the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, who arrived at the invitation of Czech President MilošeZeman. Together, they discussed current European issues, Visegrad cooperation and the development of cross-border transport and energy infrastructure. Another topic of discussion was cooperation in security and preparation of the NATO summit.

The Prime Minister Joined Czech and Bavarian Businessmen to Discuss the Development of Cooperation

The program of the second day of Premier Sobotka's official visit to Bavaria focused on cooperation in the area of research and development and support for trade and investment. The Prime Minister also met with representatives of the Bavarian State Parliament.

During a visit to the Bavarian State Parliament, Premier Sobotka awarded the Karel Kramář Medal to Olga Sipplová for her lifelong support of democratic values, contribution to the development of Czech-German relations, and continuing endeavour to bring together citizens of the two countries.
